The Robotic Chair

June 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We always knew the robots would eventually take over. We just never knew they would be this sneaky about it.

Listen and heed: If you go to the Roots on the corner of Bloor Street West and Sultan Street, feel free to choose from their impressive selection of everyday casual apparel and Luminato Festival t-shirts and hats. Enjoy a juice at the upstairs bar, sign up for a yoga class, perch by the big picture window and people-watch.

Just don’t sit down.

Roots on Bloor is the current home of the Robotic Chair, which is, well, a robotic chair. An exploding robotic chair. It sits there, looking for all the world like a harmless yet stylish piece of furniture, and then – suddenly and spectacularly – falls apart. Legs, back and seat scatter across the floor. It does this, seemingly, of its own accord. But that isn’t even the scariest part.

A few moments after falling apart, it slowly begins to pull itself back together The seat is clearly the brains of the operation, crawling toward each leg in turn and sucking it into place. Then it lifts the back off the ground, and slowly brings itself to its feet. After a minute or so, the entire process repeats itself. To wit:

Seriously. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
